Steve Burton, known affectionately as “Steve,” and his loyal 16-year-old kelpie, Gaia, passed away on November 30, leaving a significant impact on the communities of Ocean Grove and Belmont. The news of their deaths prompted an outpouring of grief, culminating in a public memorial service attended by around 100 mourners and an equal number of dogs on December 13 at Ocean Grove Park.

The memorial, while heartfelt, may not have been what Steve would have wanted. His niece, Grace, reflected on his character, stating, “He would have hated it. In human form, he would have hated it. In spirit form, hoping he loved it. It was an amazing turnout.” For many, Steve was not merely a man living on the streets; he was a self-described “existentialist” who chose a life free from the constraints of mortgage and debt. His decision to wander was a testament to his desire to live authentically and on his own terms.

Steve was known for his boisterous personality and candid honesty, which could sometimes be intimidating. Yet, he possessed a profound love for reading and an impressive memory, coupled with a genuine willingness to listen to others. Grace noted that he left “an unfillable hole in the community,” recalling numerous stories shared by those who had interacted with him, often highlighting his kindness and charisma.

“He was quite charismatic, a little bit of a mystery, and he was resolutely himself, which is not what many of us can do without shame or embarrassment,” Grace said. She emphasized that while Steve might have been perceived as incoherent by some, he held a clear understanding of himself and his choices.

The memorial service served as an opportunity for the community to pay their respects. Many attendees shared personal anecdotes about their experiences with Steve, illustrating the impact he had on their lives. “The loss was awful, but the memorial was beautiful,” Grace reflected. “It felt strangely vibrant and colourful, and to see so many community members take their time to pay their respects and share their stories was lovely.”

As the community continues to process this loss, Steve Burton and Gaia will be remembered not just for their unique lifestyle but also for the connections they forged with those around them. Their story resonates deeply, illustrating the profound ways in which individuals can affect a community, regardless of their circumstances.
