Craig McLachlan, the former television star, has withdrawn from a planned stage return in the production of Cluedo following a significant backlash on social media. McLachlan was set to appear in the comedy produced by John Frost starting January 2024. His decision to step down comes on the heels of public outcry regarding past allegations of misconduct.

In 2018, McLachlan faced serious allegations of indecent assault and sexual harassment stemming from his involvement in a 2014 production of The Rocky Horror Show. Subsequently, he initiated defamation proceedings against The Sydney Morning Herald, the ABC, and performer Christie Whelan Browne over reports detailing these allegations.

Legal Background and Acquittal

On December 15, 2020, McLachlan was acquitted of all criminal charges associated with the alleged misconduct. The court found that the prosecution did not meet the burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. Magistrate Belinda Wallington noted that the outcome might have differed under current laws, highlighting the courage of the four complainants as “brave and honest witnesses.”

In 2022, McLachlan unexpectedly abandoned his defamation case just before the media outlets and Whelan Browne were to present their evidence. He was subsequently ordered to pay legal costs estimated at around $2 million.

Withdrawal and Response to Backlash

In an emotional video statement shared on Facebook, McLachlan expressed his concerns about the negative impact of the backlash on his fellow cast members, Genevieve Lemon and Grant Piro. He criticized what he described as a targeted social media campaign aimed at discrediting not only him but also those associated with the production.

“The bullying even extends to my partner, Vanessa, and our friends and family,” McLachlan stated. “I cannot and will not let my involvement in a show result in good people being targeted by trolls and bullies. I have therefore made the decision to withdraw from the production.”

In light of the situation, producer John Frost issued an apology concerning his casting decision. He acknowledged the backlash and its impact, stating, “Craig McLachlan’s theatrical stage return wasn’t well received by some of the industry and public. The resulting impact on others involved has prompted his withdrawal from the production.” Frost expressed regret for any distress his decision may have caused.

McLachlan’s withdrawal marks a significant moment in a long and contentious journey through public and legal scrutiny, accentuating the complexities surrounding allegations in the entertainment industry.
