Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl announced that the band has completed work on a “whole new record” during their concert in Launceston, Tasmania, on Saturday night. This revelation comes shortly after the release of their last album, But Here We Are, in 2023. Grohl’s comments suggest that fans may expect another album later this year, adding excitement to the band’s ongoing Australian tour.
While performing at the UTAS Stadium, Grohl engaged with the audience, stating, “We’ll be back here sooner than you think. I know when we’re coming back! It is before my next birthday (January 14, 2027), just so you know.” He continued with a hint of humor, saying, “And we might have a whole new record of f***ing songs that we just finished the other day. I dunno!”
The Foo Fighters recently released two new tracks in 2025, titled Today’s Song and Asking For A Friend. They also launched a live album, Are Playing Where??? Vol. I, which appeared in October. The band began their Take Cover tour in Mexico earlier in January 2025.
Despite the upbeat atmosphere, the tour has faced challenges, including the absence of guitarist Pat Smear, who will not perform due to injuries sustained in a “bizarre gardening accident.” Smear suffered multiple fractures in his foot, leading to his temporary departure from the tour. The band humorously acknowledged the situation by creating a mock magazine cover featuring the 66-year-old musician in a wheelchair, with the headline reading: “Breaking News: Pat Smear Bizarre Gardening Accident!” This playful nod references the cult classic This Is Spinal Tap, which features a fictional drummer who also met an untimely end in a similar fashion.
In Smear’s absence, Jason Falkner, known for his work with artists like Beck and St. Vincent, will step in to fill his role while he recuperates. The band’s official Instagram account provided an update, stating, “In the classic tradition of rockstars having bizarre gardening accidents, Pat Smear has apparently rung in the new year by smashing the s*** out of his left foot.” They expressed their support for Smear, adding, “We’ll miss our beloved Pat as much as you will, but we want him fully healed and back on his feet as soon as possible.”
As the Foo Fighters continue their tour, fans eagerly anticipate both the new music and the return of their beloved guitarist. Grohl’s announcement marks an exciting phase for the band, promising a year filled with fresh sounds and memorable performances.
