Filming of the popular series Emily in Paris has been suspended following the unexpected death of assistant director Diego Borella, who collapsed during a shoot in Venice. Borella, aged 47, died at the scene while working at the renowned Hotel Danieli on August 21, 2025.
In an official statement provided to People, a spokesperson for Paramount Television Studios expressed their sorrow, stating, “We are deeply saddened to confirm the sudden passing of a member of the Emily in Paris production family. Our hearts go out to the individual’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.” This tragic event has prompted Netflix to pause all filming for the show’s fifth season as the cast and crew process the loss.
Borella was an experienced professional who had trained in major cities including Rome, London, and New York. He had recently returned to Italy to work on the latest season of the hit series, which features actress Lily Collins alongside co-stars Ashley Park, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Lucien Laviscount, and Lucas Bravo.
Details of the Upcoming Season and Show’s Future
As the production team mourns, fans eagerly anticipate what the new season will bring. An official synopsis reveals that as Emily’s life appears to be falling into place, a work-related idea backfires, leading to heartbreak and career challenges. The narrative emphasizes Emily’s journey toward stability and deeper connections, culminating in a confrontation with a significant secret that impacts her closest relationships.
Darren Star, the creator of Emily in Paris, has also shared insights regarding the show’s trajectory. In a conversation with Deadline in 2024, he reaffirmed that Emily is “not leaving Paris,” despite her occasional work in Rome. Star noted, “She didn’t change her Instagram handle to Emily in Rome. She is working in Rome sometimes. Sylvie’s company has an office in Rome. Emily’s getting that on its feet.”
Star clarified that while Emily may spend time in Rome, it does not signify a permanent relocation, maintaining that the heart of the show remains in Paris.
As the production team navigates this challenging moment, the future of Emily in Paris remains bright, with plans for a dynamic fifth season that continues to explore the complexities of love, career, and friendship against the backdrop of one of the world’s most iconic cities.
