A wave of fresh talent is set to make a significant impact in the entertainment industry in 2026, with a mix of emerging actors and directors capturing the spotlight. Notable names such as Owen Cooper, who recently won an Emmy for his role in *Adolescence*, and Chase Infiniti, who shone in *One Battle After Another*, are just the beginning. The upcoming year promises to unveil a host of new faces who are poised to redefine the cinematic landscape.

Directors Breaking Ground

One of the most anticipated directorial debuts comes from Kristen Stewart, who has transitioned from acting to directing with *The Chronology of Water*. This film, based on Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir, garnered a 6.5-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival and is celebrated for its visual storytelling. Although it has had a limited release in the United States, viewers are eager for its Australian debut, which has yet to be announced.

Another director to watch is Harry Lighton, whose feature debut, *Pillion*, promises to challenge conventional narratives. Described by *The Guardian* as “what *Fifty Shades of Grey* should have been,” the film stars Alexander Skarsgård and Harry Melling, exploring themes of sexual role-play and coercive control. *Pillion* is set to hit Australian cinemas on February 19.

Emerging director Harris Dickinson also has the film *Urchin* making waves. Released on Boxing Day 2025, it addresses difficult themes of homelessness and addiction through a captivating narrative. Dickinson, known for his performances in *Triangle of Sadness* and *Babygirl*, is proving to be a dual threat in the industry.

In addition, Egyptian-American filmmaker Sarah Goher will make her directorial debut with *Happy Birthday*, a coming-of-age story that critiques classism in modern-day Cairo. This film has already won the Best International Narrative Feature at the Tribeca Film Festival and is Egypt’s official entry for the 98th Academy Awards.

Nigerian director Akinola Davies Jr is also garnering attention with his film *My Father’s Shadow*, which received special mention for the Caméra d’Or at Cannes. This film explores themes of absent fatherhood during Nigeria’s tumultuous 1993 elections and is expected to gain wider distribution in 2026.

Rising Stars on the Silver Screen

Among the emerging actors, Charli XCX is set to showcase her acting skills in *The Moment*, a semi-mockumentary that follows a pop star preparing for their first arena tour. While she has made appearances in films before, this marks her first leading role, directed by renowned music photographer Aiden Zamiri.

Another standout is Joseph Zada, who is making his mark in the film industry through his role in *Sunrise on the Reaping*, part of the successful *Hunger Games* franchise. Set to release on November 19, this film positions Zada as the new Haymitch, a role previously played by Woody Harrelson. Given the franchise’s history of launching careers, Zada could quickly rise to fame.

Korean-Australian actress Yerin Ha will also gain visibility in 2026, starring in the fourth season of *Bridgerton*. Her character, Sophie Baek, will be introduced in the first part of the season, which premieres on Netflix on January 29.

Emerging Australian actress Sophie Wilde has an exciting year ahead. Following her impressive performance in *Talk to Me*, she is slated to star in multiple productions, including *Digger* alongside Tom Cruise and the A24 thriller *October*.

Lastly, Jaafar Jackson, nephew of the late pop star Michael Jackson, will be making his acting debut in *Michael*, set to release on April 23. This biopic is expected to propel Jackson into the limelight, marking a significant transition from his previous career focused on music.

As we approach 2026, the film industry is set to welcome a diverse array of talent both in front of and behind the camera. Audiences can look forward to a year rich with innovation and storytelling, as these emerging artists bring their unique perspectives to the screen.
