Epic Games has announced significant changes for Fortnite creators, allowing them to sell in-game items and cosmetics starting in December 2025. This new initiative aims to enhance the Creator Ecosystem, enabling developers to monetize their creations directly from their in-game islands. Until the end of 2026, creators will retain all profits from their sales, after which Epic will take a 50% share to support the game’s ongoing ecosystem.
In a recent blog post detailing the Creator Ecosystem Update, Epic outlined that creators will bypass the existing game storefront, offering a more streamlined process for selling items. Initially, creators will earn the full value of V-Bucks from item sales. After the initial period, they will receive approximately 50% of the V-Bucks value, which translates to about 37% of retail spending after factoring in platform and store fees.
To compute the V-Bucks value in US dollars, Epic will assess total customer spending on V-Bucks, deduct relevant platform fees—which currently range from 12% on the Epic Games Store to 30% on console platforms—and divide this by the total V-Bucks expended by players. This approach ensures a transparent and fair distribution of earnings for creators.
Categories and Advertising Opportunities
Items available for sale will fall into two main categories: ‘consumable’ and ‘durable’. Consumable items include single-use or limited-use products, while durable items encompass skins and other cosmetic enhancements. Creators interested in promoting their items can purchase advertising space on a new feature called Sponsored Row, which will allow them to showcase their islands to a broader audience.
Additionally, creators will benefit from an engagement pool, which measures player activity on their islands. Factors influencing this revenue pool include the time players spend on a creator’s island, the amount of money spent there, and the retention rate of visitors.
This initiative marks a notable shift in how Fortnite engages with its creator community, offering new avenues for revenue generation and fostering a more vibrant ecosystem. As Epic Games continues to evolve Fortnite, the introduction of these monetization options reflects the company’s commitment to supporting its creators and enhancing user experience within the game.
As players await the arrival of the new Power Rangers Megazord, the upcoming changes indicate that Fortnite is not only focused on gameplay but also on empowering its creator community, setting the stage for a more dynamic and interactive environment in the popular game.
