horseback-ride-returns-to-spread-holiday-cheer-and-raise-funds

Last year, a light-hearted horseback ride through Crookwell turned into a festive tradition, and now it has evolved into a charity event with a purpose. On December 20, 2024, the Upper Lachlan Riders will host the Christmas Cheer Ride, aiming to raise funds for families in need during the holiday season.

The ride originated when Alex Meggitt and her friends, Georgia Kerfoot, Haley Snape, and Rachel Taylor, donned silly Christmas costumes and set off on horseback to spread cheer. Their journey resulted in laughter and a joyful spectacle for local residents, culminating at the Top Pub in Crookwell. This year, however, the event takes on a new significance as the riders plan to support local families facing hardship.

“We thought if we’re going to do it again, we might as well do it for a purpose,” Meggitt stated. All proceeds from the ride will benefit Vinnies Crookwell, which will provide gift cards to assist families in purchasing presents and essentials. Meggitt hopes to raise $5,000 to help approximately 100 to 150 families who struggle during the Christmas season.

To this end, Meggitt has even donated her own wedding dress and a bridesmaid dress to bolster fundraising efforts. “Between 100 and 150 families go without during Christmas in the Upper Lachlan,” she added. “We want to help brighten up their Christmas this year.”

The event will be more organized than last year’s casual trot. Goulburn Street will be closed to accommodate the anticipated 20 riders, including local business owners and police officers. The ride will commence at 15:00 from Crookwell Showground, winding through town and concluding at the Top Pub by around 18:00.

Participants and onlookers can expect a festive atmosphere. The occasion will feature live music, a barbecue, a small horse-drawn sulky for children, an in-house Santa Claus, and free lollies donated by Crookwell IGA.

Community engagement has been strong, and excitement is building as the date approaches. “People are really looking forward to it,” Meggitt shared. Locals and visitors are encouraged to donate or simply come out to cheer the riders on.

When asked if she felt any sadness about parting with her wedding dress, Meggitt responded candidly, “It was just sitting there, not doing anything. I’m not getting married again.”
