The 2026 Hughenden Festival of Outback Skies has been officially announced as a world premiere event, featuring a landmark performance made possible by a funding boost from the Queensland Government. The Flinders Shire Council secured $43,485 from the Queensland Arts Project Fund (QAPF), facilitating a unique collaboration between the Townsville Great Barrier Reef Orchestra and acclaimed didgeridoo virtuoso William Barton.
This festival is set to take place from May 1 to 3, 2026, culminating in a finale performance where the orchestra will debut a new composition by Barton. His work is scheduled for completion later this month, and this event marks a significant cultural milestone for the region, showcasing the growing importance of the festival on the artistic landscape.
Major Cultural Event for Hughenden
Mayor Kate Peddle expressed enthusiasm for the funding’s impact on the festival, stating, “This funding through the Queensland Arts Project Fund allows us to deliver something truly extraordinary for our region.” She highlighted the honor of hosting the world premiere, emphasizing that it places the festival “firmly on the cultural map” and grants the community access to a world-class classical music experience under the Outback skies.
The festival’s history adds depth to its upcoming program. Peddle noted that the inaugural festival featured a string quartet from the orchestra, and the return of a larger ensemble for this event illustrates its growth over the years. She remarked, “This performance will provide wonderful exposure to classical and orchestral music for our community, particularly for young people who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience a live recital of this calibre.”
Planning Ahead for Festival Attendees
The Festival Finale will be a highlight of the 2026 program, which aims to celebrate arts, culture, and community. As excitement builds, the council is urging potential visitors to secure accommodation early, as demand is already high. A second release of powered camping sites will be announced soon, with a limited number of glamping tents still available.
Peddle encouraged festival-goers to plan ahead: “We’re seeing great momentum for 2026, and we encourage visitors to secure their tickets and accommodation early to avoid missing out.”
Additional program details will be unveiled in the lead-up to the festival. For ticket purchases and accommodation information, attendees can visit the official festival website at www.festivalofoutbackskies.com.au.
