Jessie J has confirmed that her ex-partner, Channing Tatum, approved her new song “Complicated,” which references his role in the 2012 film Magic Mike. The singer revealed that Tatum listened to the track prior to its release and had no reservations about her mentioning him in the lyrics. This collaboration comes as part of her latest album, Don’t Tease Me With A Good Time.
In an interview with The Guardian, Jessie stated, “I played him the song to see if he’s OK with it and he was.” In “Complicated,” she reflects on their past relationship, singing, “2017 went by ’cause I wanted / 2018 to be mine and be honest. Met a Magic Mike, will that ever be forgotten? ‘Cause everything they write / That’s the headline and the topic.”
The 37-year-old artist, who shares a two-year-old son named Sky with her current partner, Chanan Safir Colman, described Tatum as “such a sweet guy.” She added, “Oh, he’s so sweet. Oh my God, yeah! Channing is such a sweet guy.” Reflecting on their time together, Jessie emphasized their strong friendship and the enjoyable moments they shared.
While Jessie J openly discusses her past with Tatum, she has refuted claims that another track, “Threw It Away,” is a diss aimed at the actor. Speculation arose due to the song’s intense lyrics: “Don’t ya dare rewrite the story. I’m the beauty, you’re the beast.” To clarify, Jessie took to her Instagram Stories, asserting, “Threw it away is NOT about @channingtatum I NEVER said it was.”
She explained her motivation for addressing the rumors, stating, “The reason I am saying something is because I know if the shoe was on the other foot he would correct the narrative too.” Jessie further emphasized her respect for Tatum, stating, “I would never want his beautiful daughter to ever read any of it or be told about it thinking I said it about her Dad. Not fair. Channing and I ended our relationship on great terms and I have nothing but respect for him; he was never a beast to me.”
