During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show on October 31, 2025, the 40-year-old actress shared a humorous anecdote involving her eldest daughter, Edie, who once requested a drawing of a bird taking away her younger sister, Delilah.
In response to Edie’s peculiar request, Knightley quipped, “I thought I had better write a book so I could get the baby back!” This light-hearted comment underscores the creativity that blossomed during Edie’s sleepless nights. To help her daughter settle, Knightley spent months crafting illustrations for Edie to wake up to, transforming challenging nights into artistic endeavors.
Art and Dyslexia Fuel Creativity
Knightley, who has been open about her struggles with dyslexia, explained how drawing aids her memory. “I draw a lot – I am dyslexic, so I learn my lines by listening to them, and while I am listening, I draw,” she said. The actress emphasized that detailed drawings help engrain lines in her mind, illustrating the intersection of art and learning in her life.
The actress also reflected on the lasting legacy of her iconic role in the 2002 film Bend It Like Beckham, which continues to resonate with audiences today. She noted that many young girls approach her, excited to discuss the film, particularly as women’s football has gained significant popularity. “It’s mainly little girls. They love it because women’s football has become such a huge thing now,” she remarked.
However, Knightley playfully noted that her daughters, Edie and Delilah, prefer to watch live games rather than revisit her film. “I keep trying to get my own girls to watch it, but they are like, ‘You’re okay, we’ll watch the Euros instead!’”
A Legacy of Inspiration
Knightley’s reflections on both her children’s book and her film highlight the creative connections she fosters in her family and the impact her work has had on the broader community. Her debut children’s book is not just a personal project but also a celebration of the joys and challenges of motherhood, infused with humor and love.
With her artistic ventures, Knightley continues to inspire both children and adults alike, proving that creativity can flourish in even the most unexpected circumstances.
