Leonardo DiCaprio is embracing a new perspective on life as he enters his fifties. Celebrating his milestone birthday in November 2024, the acclaimed actor expressed a desire to be “more honest” and to avoid wasting time on superficial interactions. In an interview with Esquire UK, he reflected on how this significant life event has reshaped his outlook.
DiCaprio stated, “Turning 50 creates a feeling like you have a desire to just be more honest and not waste your time.” He pointed to the example set by his mother, who speaks her mind without hesitation. This candid approach, he believes, is essential as he navigates personal and professional relationships moving forward. He acknowledged the risks involved in being straightforward, saying, “Being more upfront risks having things fall apart or risking disagreements.”
The actor, known for iconic films such as Titanic, The Aviator, The Departed, and The Revenant, is focused on prioritizing authenticity in his interactions. “You have to just be much more upfront. It’s almost a responsibility,” he remarked, recognizing that with more life behind him than ahead, the urgency to be genuine has increased.
Achieving a balance between his career and personal life is also a priority for DiCaprio. He shared insights into his work habits, saying, “I think I’m good at it because I take a lot of time off between films.” This approach allows him to reset and engage fully with his personal life after filming. He noted, “Life goes on hold when you’re filming. Everything stops and gets put on the back burner.”
With a successful career and status as one of the world’s highest-paid actors, DiCaprio feels fortunate to have the freedom to choose his projects. He commented on the potential anxieties of continuous work, stating, “To go from film to film, I would be scared about what I have to come back to. I’m very fortunate for that.”
As he continues to navigate his career and personal growth, DiCaprio’s commitment to honesty and balance may serve as an inspiration to others facing similar crossroads in life.
The Autumn issue of Esquire UK featuring DiCaprio’s interview is set to be released on August 14, 2025.
