Filming for the new live-action adaptation of Resident Evil has officially commenced, as the production team recreates the infamous Raccoon City. Under the direction of Zach Cregger, known for his acclaimed film Barbarian, the set has been transformed from sections of Prague to mirror the iconic video game location. Newly surfaced images reveal a wintery scene, a notable shift from the original game aesthetics.
These behind-the-scenes photos do not feature infected characters, yet they suggest scenes of action, with reports indicating that several sequences involving explosions and street battles have already been filmed. According to Residence of Evil, the production is ensuring that the intensity of the franchise translates to the big screen.
Cregger has cited the influences of Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4 in shaping this adaptation. He emphasizes that while he is putting his unique spin on the project, he remains true to the essence of the franchise. “I don’t think I am taking any more liberties with this [movie] than the game franchise does. I think I am coloring within the lines,” Cregger remarked earlier this year.
The film features an intriguing cast, including Kali Reis from True Detective: Night Country and Austin Abrams of Euphoria fame. Additionally, Zach Cherry, known for his role in Apple TV+’s Severance, has reportedly joined the ensemble.
Fans of the franchise can look forward to the film’s release in theaters on September 18, 2026. In the realm of video games, Resident Evil Requiem is set to launch on multiple platforms, including PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2, on February 27, 2026.
Additionally, the excitement continues for video game adaptations, as Mortal Kombat 2 is scheduled for release on May 8, 2026, following a rescheduling from its original October 24 date due to a last-minute seven-month delay.
As anticipation builds for both the film and the upcoming video game, fans are eager to see how Cregger’s vision unfolds and how it honors the beloved series.
