Artistic innovation is set to shine at this year’s Parkes Elvis Festival, as the Parkes Community Arts group prepares to showcase a unique float in the festival’s street parade. Emphasizing creativity, sustainability, and community engagement, the artists are determined to leave a lasting impression with their vibrant display.

The float, themed around Elvis Presley’s iconic “Love Me Tender,” will feature a giant red Acubra hat atop a 1974 lemon Corolla. The creative team has crafted a variety of elements, including cardboard figures of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, whimsical lollipops, and elaborate headpieces reminiscent of the Las Vegas scene. According to group member Margot Jolly, the float will embody the spirit of the festival, which thrives on surprise and excitement.

“We have been working on our float for the Elvis parade, and it’s all about what is important to us,” Jolly stated. “Art, creativity, and sustainability—getting together to create art and culture right here.” The group has committed to using recycled materials for almost every component of the float, with the exception of tape and zip ties. Fellow artist Helen Standen highlighted the effort, stating, “Everything except the tape and zip ties is recycled.”

The float will feature around seven distinct elements, with up to 20 participants involved in bringing the vision to life. Jolly noted, “There will be lots of colour and movement, music, and there will be walkers.” The group has dedicated significant time to this project, with some members working daily since the start of the year, as well as before Christmas.

Their participation in the festival extends beyond the parade; it represents a desire to connect with both locals and visitors. The group has recently established the Parkes Arts and Sustainability Hub (PASH), aiming to foster creativity and community involvement. They welcome all residents to join their initiatives, reinforcing the notion that art can be a unifying force.

While aiming for artistic expression, the artists are also eager to engage in friendly competition. Jolly mentioned their aspirations to win the title of best float, acknowledging the impressive efforts of the Parkes Dragon Boat Club, which consistently delivers a standout entry. “So cheer and clap for us when we go past,” she encouraged festival-goers.

Reflecting on the enduring appeal of the Elvis Festival, which has celebrated its 33rd year, Jolly added, “That’s why the Elvis Festival has lasted so long: These little, subtle plays on Elvis and his movies, and we don’t take it all too seriously. We’re having fun and singing really badly.”

As the Parkes Elvis Festival approaches, anticipation builds for the parade, promising a showcase of creativity and community spirit, underscored by the artistry and commitment of local creators.
