Paul Rodgers, the iconic frontman of Bad Company, did not attend the band’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on November 8, 2023. The ceremony took place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, marking a significant moment for the legendary rock group. Rodgers made the decision to skip the event due to health concerns, stating that he had experienced high blood pressure, chest pains, and heart palpitations leading up to the ceremony.

In an interview with Rolling Stone Brasil, Rodgers reflected on his choice, saying, “I feel that I dodged a bullet by doing that.” He emphasized the importance of prioritizing his health, noting that his doctor advised against traveling. “He recommended that I stay home, rest and remain calm,” he added.

The induction ceremony would have been the first time Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke performed together in six years. Despite his absence, Rodgers expressed confidence in Kirke’s performance, stating on Instagram, “Simon along with some outstanding musicians will be stepping in for me—guaranteed to rock.”

Rodgers acknowledged the stress of public performances, saying, “I have no problem singing; it’s the stress of everything else.” He had previously confirmed his decision to miss the ceremony in a social media post, expressing disappointment but understanding the necessity of focusing on his well-being.

Bad Company, known for hits like “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” includes surviving members Rodgers and Kirke, along with the late guitarist Mick Ralphs and bassist Boz Burrell. Ralphs passed away in June 2023 at the age of 81, while Burrell died in 2006. The band’s former vocalist, Brian Howe, also passed away in 2020.

Rodgers’ health issues have been a significant concern in recent years. In 2019, he suffered a series of strokes that impacted his ability to speak. During a CBS Mornings interview, he recounted the challenges he faced, stating, “I couldn’t do anything, to be honest. I couldn’t speak.” His recovery journey included surgery following a major stroke, which he initially feared could be fatal. “They told me: ‘You may not come out of this alive,’” he recalled, adding, “Oh, well, that’s a plus, isn’t it?”

Despite these challenges, Rodgers has made strides in his recovery, allowing him to return to music. In 2023, he released his album, Midnight Rose. He described the process of regaining his voice and musical abilities as rewarding, saying that each achievement, no matter how small, felt significant.

As Bad Company was honored at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the legacy of the band and its members continues to resonate with fans worldwide. While Rodgers may have missed this important event, his focus on health and recovery highlights the importance of well-being, even amidst a celebrated career in music.
