Swedish pop artist Robyn is making a highly anticipated return to the music scene with her new album, Sexistential, set to release on March 27, 2024. After nearly eight years since her last album, Honey, Robyn has revealed that this upcoming project will feature nine tracks, including two new singles, “Dopamine” and the title track “Sexistential.”
The single “Dopamine” was released in November 2023, generating excitement among fans. The title track, “Sexistential,” delves into Robyn’s personal experiences during her in vitro fertilization (IVF) journey. Inspired by a joke from musician André 3000 about his reluctance to rap about a colonoscopy, Robyn felt compelled to explore the topic of IVF in her music. She remarked, “It was my cue. I have to do this, I have to write a rap about IVF.”
In addition to “Sexistential,” Robyn also premiered the track “Talk To Me,” which showcases her signature style, blending catchy melodies with a vibrant synth-pop sound. This song was produced by her long-time collaborator Klas Åhlund and Oscar Holter, with co-writing contributions from Max Martin, a collaborator since her teenage years in the late 1990s. Robyn described “Talk To Me” as a reflection of her experiences during the pandemic, a time when physical interactions were limited. “I like talkers, that turns me on,” she said, highlighting the song’s essence of connection.
Exploring Themes of Sensuality and Self-Discovery
Robyn’s approach to Sexistential embodies a sense of exploration and self-discovery. She likened the album’s theme to “a spaceship coming through the atmosphere at a really high speed and crash landing.” This metaphor illustrates her feelings of returning to herself after extensive exploration in her life.
“Exploring my sensual life is the same feeling as when I make a good song,” she explained. “It’s such a beautiful kind of sensitive vibration that takes so much work to keep afloat.” Robyn emphasized the importance of maintaining a sense of sensuality, stating, “I feel like the purpose of my life is to stay horny — it doesn’t even have to be about sex, but it’s feeling sensual and attracted to things that I enjoy, and not letting anything take over that.”
As fans eagerly await the full album, Robyn’s return marks a significant moment in her career. Her unique blend of personal narrative and infectious pop sound promises an exciting addition to her discography, reaffirming her status as a trailblazer in the music industry. With the release of Sexistential, Robyn continues to captivate audiences with her bold, authentic voice and innovative approach to pop music.
