Australian singer-songwriter Ruel recently opened up about his unique experiences and personal insights in an engaging interview. He shared memorable interactions with fans, his thoughts on fashion, and reflections on his life as a young artist, all while promoting his latest album, Kicking My Feet, released by Recess Records.
One of the standout moments from his career occurred during a meet-and-greet at his first show in New Zealand. A fan presented him with a necklace featuring a molar, stating, “You can wear this and I’ll always be a part of you.” Ruel admitted this gesture left him feeling a bit unsettled, acknowledging the peculiar nature of the gift.
Reflecting on his romantic side, Ruel recounted a particularly memorable first anniversary with his girlfriend during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. With travel restrictions in place, he arranged a surprise picnic on Shark Island, located in the middle of Sydney Harbour. He hired a luxury boat taxi, taking advantage of the lower prices during the pandemic, to create a special moment amid challenging times.
Ruel also shared a quirky talent—when he holds water in his mouth, a perfect space forms between his teeth, allowing him to create a fountain-like effect. “It’s quite beautiful but also pretty disgusting to witness,” he remarked.
On the topic of fashion, Ruel expressed a controversial opinion regarding sunglasses, stating that he believes individuals should be over the age of 20 to wear them. “Anyone who’s a teenager wearing sunglasses looks like the biggest little douchebag,” he said candidly. He reflected on his own teenage years, admitting he felt foolish wearing them at a festival.
As a young artist, Ruel faced the pressures of adulthood while still wanting to embrace his youth. He advised others in similar situations not to feel shame for wanting to enjoy life, saying, “Nothing is truly that serious in this industry.”
Ruel’s candidness extended to discussing his childhood fears. He revealed that watching The Wizard of Oz had instilled an intense fear of witches that haunted him for years. “I had these nightmares all about witches,” he explained, connecting the dots to his childhood experiences.
In a lighter moment, Ruel described an unusual incident during a performance when his belt broke, causing his pants to fall. “I kept singing as I was pulling my pants back up,” he recounted, demonstrating his ability to handle unexpected situations with humor and grace.
With a blend of humor and introspection, Ruel’s reflections provide a glimpse into the life of a young artist navigating fame and personal growth. His album, Kicking My Feet, is now available, showcasing his evolving artistry and unique perspective on life.
