Sam Ryder has officially released his second studio album, titled Heartland, through the independent label Artist Theory. The album, which debuted on November 6, 2023, reflects the emotional landscape of the past few years, according to the artist himself. This marks a pivotal moment for Ryder, who gained widespread recognition as the runner-up in the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest with his hit song Space Man.

After the success of his first album, which reached No. 1 and garnered billions of global streams, Ryder faced a challenging period. He experienced a confidence crisis and found himself without a record label following his departure from Parlophone. Seeking renewal, he recorded Heartland in Nashville, where he resided in a log cabin, immersing himself in the local musical influences.

Reflecting on Personal Journeys

Ryder describes the album as a personal collection of songs that aim to connect with listeners, regardless of their circumstances. He stated, “This record is a collection of songs attempting to convey the feeling of the last couple of years. The wish is to find a connection with you no matter where you are in the world, whether it’s flying high or feeling like you’re the only ship out on the ocean.” His intention is to resonate with those navigating complex emotions, such as forgiveness and self-doubt.

The lead single, The Feeling Never Went Away, encapsulates the theme of lingering emotions. Ryder explained, “It’s about still having feelings for someone or something even though they perhaps don’t deserve them anymore… Even though I think I’ve conquered them, back they come. Healing and breaking the cycle is about recognising these feelings and accepting them.”

Collaborations and Upcoming Performances

The 13-track album includes previously released songs such as White Lies, OH OK, and Armour. Notable collaborators on Heartland include prominent producers and songwriters like Mikky Ekko, Steve Mac, and Mike Elizondo, contributing to the album’s rich soundscape.

Ryder’s latest project follows his highly praised debut at the Glastonbury Festival in June 2023, and it precedes his most significant headline show to date at Wembley Arena on November 6. This performance holds special significance for Ryder, as it is the same venue where he attended his first concert as a teenager. Tickets for the eagerly anticipated Wembley show are available through AEG Presents.
