Australian snowboarding champion Scotty James has secured a deal with Netflix for a documentary titled ‘Pipe Dream’, set to premiere on December 19, 2023. The film will chronicle his remarkable journey over two decades, offering insights into both his professional career and personal life as he prepares for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Italy.

As James competes in the season-opening halfpipe World Cup at Secret Garden in Zhangjiakou, China, he aims to enhance his Olympic legacy. The event marks a significant moment for James, who earned a silver medal at the same venue during the 2022 Winter Olympics, finishing just behind Japan’s Ayumu Hirano. In the recent heat, James scored 82.33, securing second place behind Hirano’s impressive 90.00.

Documentary Highlights James’s Journey

Directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Pat Dimon, ‘Pipe Dream’ provides a personal and intimate perspective on James’s life. The documentary includes never-before-seen home videos and competition highlights, presenting a narrative that intertwines his athletic achievements with family life. Notably, viewers will see interviews with his wife, Chloe Stroll, and her brother, Formula 1 star Lance Stroll, alongside prominent figures in snowboarding, such as Torah Bright, Shaun White, and Chloe Kim.

Reflecting on the documentary, James stated, “There were a lot of reasons I wanted to do a documentary, and a lot of things I discovered about myself and what other people thought about me through the process as well.” He expressed excitement about sharing his story, noting that he had never previously narrated his journey in such depth. “It’s been a really wild ride to date from when I was a kid to now,” he added.

James emphasized the emotional aspect of the project, explaining that it felt like the timing was right for such a release. With the documentary set to debut on a global platform like Netflix, he expressed pride in how his story will be told.

Competitive Landscape at the World Cup

As James prepares for the World Cup, he faces tough competition, having finished fifth in the qualifying round. Ruka Hirano, unrelated to Ayumu, topped the qualification heat with a score of 90.66. The final will feature 14 athletes, with Japan fielding seven competitors. Notably, James stands as the only top-six competitor not hailing from Japan.

In the lead-up to the Winter Olympics, which commence on February 6, 2024, James is determined to secure the elusive gold medal that has so far evaded him. His fellow Australian, Valentino Guseli, is also vying for Olympic qualification, focusing on the big air World Cup in Steamboat, USA, after recovering from knee surgery.

Meanwhile, Josie Baff is set to lead the Australian team in the snowboard cross World Cup in Cervinia, Italy, starting on December 13. Baff, who finished fourth overall last season, looks to build on her momentum following a recent victory in the European Cup.

With the Winter Olympics just months away, the spotlight intensifies on athletes like Scotty James, who continue to push boundaries in their sports while sharing their unique stories with the world.
