The upcoming Academy Awards are set to feature a historic race, as the film Sinners has garnered an unprecedented 16 nominations, the highest ever recorded for a single film. This Segregation-era thriller, starring Michael B. Jordan, has established itself as a frontrunner for the prestigious awards, scheduled to take place on March 15, 2026. It will compete against notable films such as One Battle After Another, Frankenstein, Hamnet, and Marty Supreme for the coveted Best Picture award.
Previously, the record for the most nominations in a single year was held by three films: All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land, each with 14 nods. The significant achievement by Sinners highlights its strong reception and critical acclaim.
In addition to Best Picture, Sinners has secured nominations in several high-profile categories. Michael B. Jordan is nominated for Best Actor for his dual portrayal of twin brothers in 1930s Mississippi. Other nominations for the film include Best Director for Ryan Coogler, Best Supporting Actor for Delroy Lindo, Best Supporting Actress for Wunmi Mosaku, as well as nods for Best Cinematography, Costume Design, Original Screenplay, and Visual Effects.
The competition for Best Actor will be fierce, with Leonardo DiCaprio nominated for his role in One Battle After Another and Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme. For Best Actress, Jessie Buckley has been recognized for her performance in Hamnet, while Kate Hudson received a nomination for Song Sung Blue. Australian actress Rose Byrne is also in contention for Best Actress for her role in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. She recently won a Golden Globe for this performance, adding momentum to her Oscar bid.
The nomination list also includes Jacob Elordi, another Australian actor, who has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the monster in Frankenstein.
Winners will be determined by the approximately 10,000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, comprising actors, producers, directors, and other industry professionals. The awards ceremony will be broadcast live by ABC, with comedian Conan O’Brien returning as host for the second consecutive year.
In terms of studio performances, Warner Bros Discovery led all studios this year with a total of 30 nominations, reflecting its strong lineup of films. Notably, Netflix is still in search of its first Best Picture win, despite multiple nominations for critically acclaimed films like Roma and The Irishman. This year, it hopes to break the streak with Frankenstein, which has received nine nominations.
The 2026 Academy Awards promises to be a landmark event, showcasing a diverse array of talent and storytelling. With Sinners leading the charge, anticipation builds for what could be a historic evening in film.
