The children’s entertainment group The Vegetable Plot is set to launch a new show aimed at encouraging young audiences to appreciate healthy foods. Titled Pineapple People, the performance will make its world premiere at The Joan in Penrith on September 27, 2023, featuring two shows and a special workshop designed for children aged five to nine.
Founded in 2014 during the Sydney Fringe, The Vegetable Plot began as a trio and has since grown into a quartet. The group consists of guitarist Luke Escombe as Aspara Gus, puppeteer and percussionist Paige Hoorweg as Ru Barb, bass player and vocalist Nick Hoorweg as Sir Paul McCarrotney, and puppeteer and vocalist Kay Yasugi as Avo Kaydo. The creative vision for the ensemble emerged when Escombe’s son, Harry, was born, inspiring him to create family-friendly music.
Escombe described his motivation for the project, stating, “I was looking for a way to keep playing the music I loved but to do it in a way that was healthier and more family-friendly.” He emphasized the richness of language and the potential for fun characters as key elements in creating a captivating experience for children.
The upcoming show, Pineapple People, will include a performance of the band’s new songs and a session titled The Magical Garden Music and Songwriting Workshop, co-created with the Sydney Opera House. During this workshop, children will learn about songwriting, engage in vocal warm-ups, and even co-write a song with the band.
Following the premiere, the group will embark on a tour across New South Wales and Victoria. They have also released a new album, Season Three, and are preparing to launch an animated series on YouTube.
Escombe reflected on the growth of the group, noting the importance of engaging young audiences effectively. “We definitely had to hone our craft and learn how to structure our shows moment to moment to keep the kids energized and engaged,” he explained. He emphasized that children are fully present during performances, making the experience unique and special.
The premiere of Pineapple People at The Joan will take place with two performances at 10:00 and 14:00, followed by the workshop at midday. For more details about the show and tour dates, visit thevegetableplot.com.au.
