Will Reeve, the son of late actor Christopher Reeve, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming Superman film, emphasizing that his family does not consider themselves “gatekeepers” of the iconic character. In an interview with Good Morning America on July 10, 2025, the 33-year-old journalist clarified that the cast and crew of the new film, which stars David Corenswet as Superman, do not need his family’s approval to tell their story.

“I just want to say: my dad, and my siblings, and I, we’re not gatekeepers of Superman,” Will stated. He appreciated that the filmmakers consulted his family during the production process but reiterated that such approval is unnecessary. “David and the rest of the cast and crew don’t need to seek our approval or even welcome us on their journey, but we’re grateful that they did and excited for everybody to see it.”

During his visit to the film’s set in Atlanta, Will had a memorable encounter with Corenswet. He recounted, “We’re sitting watching all these monitors and things and, out of the corner of my eye, I hear someone go, ‘Hi, Will.’ With a deep voice.” Initially taken aback, he realized it was Corenswet in costume. “Oh, wow. That’s Superman. Who, of course, I associate with my dad,” he added. This moment underscored the emotional connection Will has with the character his father famously portrayed from 1978 to 1987.

In addition to sharing his support for the film, Will Reeve made a cameo appearance as a journalist, reflecting his real-life profession as a reporter for ABC News. He described the filming experience as “really great,” despite feeling more nervous than he does in his regular job due to the crowd and the pressure of memorizing a line.

The film, directed by James Gunn, marks the beginning of a new era for the DC Universe. Gunn, who also serves as CEO of DC Studios, addressed concerns about the film’s financial expectations. In an interview with GQ magazine, he dismissed the notion that the film must gross $700 million to be deemed successful. “This is not the riskiest endeavor in the world. Is there something riding on it? Yeah, but it’s not as big as people make it out to be,” he stated.

Gunn further criticized the inflated expectations surrounding box office performance, asserting, “They hear these numbers that the movie’s only going to be successful if it makes $700 million or something and it’s just complete and utter nonsense.” His comments reflect a broader shift in the industry toward more realistic assessments of film success, especially in the evolving landscape of superhero movies.

As anticipation builds for the new Superman film, both Will Reeve’s heartfelt sentiments and Gunn’s candid remarks contribute to a compelling narrative surrounding the legacy of this beloved character. With a fresh cast and creative team at the helm, fans eagerly await the film’s release, which promises to reignite the iconic superhero’s story for a new generation.
