The 2025 Battle of the Bands in Mount Gambier showcased the remarkable talents of local young musicians, culminating in a vibrant celebration of music. On Saturday, eleven acts took to the stage at the Woolstore Brewery, captivating an enthusiastic audience with a blend of rock riffs and soulful ballads. In a fiercely competitive atmosphere, the high school band, The Short Sleeves, emerged victorious, solidifying their status as rising stars in the Limestone Coast music scene.

The event featured a diverse lineup of performers, including Scarlett, Joyce, Solus, Willoism, Kim Marie B, Gabriel Strachan, Vulpermancer, Corduroy, Fat Pony, and Dom and Jesse. Each artist delivered a 25-minute set, with a noticeable increase in original content compared to previous years, according to event organizers.

Judging Panel and Audience Response

The judging panel, praised for their expertise, included notable figures in the local music community: Alison Newman, Jack Lane, Melanie Riley, and Thomas Wilson. Bronte Ellard, founder of Gigs and Music Connect Mount Gambier, expressed her satisfaction with the panel, stating, “They are four truly passionate individuals who have made a difference to the scene and have heaps of experience.”

She also highlighted the impressive turnout this year, noting that the crowd was larger than in previous years. “We suspect we had a full house; it was certainly busier than last year,” Ellard remarked. The increased attendance reflects a growing interest in local live music, with even well-known musicians like Slim Krusty spotted among the audience.

The competition was tight, with judges employing a scoring system to determine the winner. The scores indicated that the contest was closer than ever, showcasing the high caliber of talent present. Last year, The Short Sleeves placed third, making their victory this year a significant achievement and a testament to their dedication.

Future of Local Music Events

Looking ahead, Ellard confirmed that the Battle of the Bands will return next year with “some massive changes and surprises,” aiming to build on the momentum gained from this year’s event. The growing community support and the evident passion for music suggest a bright future for live music in the Limestone Coast.

As the final applause echoed through the brewery, the event not only celebrated the artistic talents of young musicians but also reinforced the importance of local music culture. The Battle of the Bands exemplifies how community engagement can foster artistic growth and create lasting memories for both performers and audiences alike.
