This week, the Australian Medical Association (AMA) recognized two exceptional members for their contributions to medicine and community service. Dr. Paul Bauert, former President of AMA Northern Territory, has retired after a distinguished career, while Dr. Haseeb Riaz of AMA Western Australia has been awarded the title of Young Australian of the Year for WA.

Dr. Paul Bauert’s Legacy in Child Health

Dr. Bauert served as President of the AMA Northern Territory during multiple terms from 1993 to 2011. Throughout his career, he was a passionate advocate for enhancing child health services in the region. His commitment to paediatric medicine was evident during his tenure as the Paediatric Representative on the AMA Federal Council, where he contributed significantly to national discussions on children’s health.

In the 1980s, Dr. Bauert made history as the first paediatric registrar in the Northern Territory, training under the esteemed consultant Dr. Alan Walker. He later practiced as a consultant paediatrician in both the Northern Territory and Queensland. His dedication to improving health outcomes for children was recognized with the prestigious AMA President’s Medal, which he received twice for his outstanding service and advocacy.

As Dr. Bauert transitions into retirement, the AMA extends its best wishes for his future endeavors, recognizing the lasting impact he has had on the medical community and the lives of countless children.

Dr. Haseeb Riaz: Champion of Positive Masculinity

In a separate but equally commendable achievement, Dr. Haseeb Riaz has been honored as the Young Australian of the Year for Western Australia, sharing the accolade with Gareth Shanthikumar. Dr. Riaz is an intern at Royal Perth Hospital and has made significant strides in promoting positive masculinity through his educational initiative, MAN-UP, which he co-founded.

Dr. Riaz has held various leadership roles, including chair of the Medical Student Council of WA and board director of the Australian Medical Students Association. He actively engages with initiatives aimed at dismantling negative stereotypes surrounding masculinity that affect young men. Through MAN-UP, Dr. Riaz and his team work to foster mental health awareness, encourage open communication, and create pathways to healthier lifestyles for young men.

In a recent event celebrating his award, Dr. Riaz was seen alongside WA Premier Roger Cook and co-founder Gareth Shanthikumar, highlighting the community support for their mission. The work of Dr. Riaz not only exemplifies personal achievement but also reflects a commitment to societal progress, addressing issues that are vital for the wellbeing of future generations.

The AMA proudly acknowledges the remarkable contributions of both Dr. Bauert and Dr. Riaz, whose dedication to medicine and community service continues to inspire others in the health sector.
