The Avalon Baptist Peace Church (ABPC) and Seaforth Baptist, both located on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, have officially been disaffiliated from the NSW/ACT Baptist Association as of November 8, 2023. This decision follows the churches’ acceptance of marriage equality, a stance that contrasts with the Association’s rejection of the practice.
In a statement reflecting on the disaffiliation, Dr. Sally Longley, Pastor of Avalon Baptist, expressed profound sadness over the decision. She articulated the church’s belief that the Association’s position on marriage equality is both unwelcoming and un-Biblical. “We respect the position of the Association regarding marriage equality, even though we think it is un-Biblical and unwelcoming,” she stated.
Dr. Longley emphasized the importance of mutual respect and fellowship, stating, “In this time of polarization, furious religion, and social disgust where people feel justified in spitting out those they disagree with, we would have hoped that the Baptist Association had the Biblical depth and maturity to show a different way.” She noted that Avalon Baptist strives to create a space that embraces diverse perspectives, including those related to LGBTQI issues.
Commitment to Inclusivity
Avalon Baptist is committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment for all individuals, regardless of their views on marriage. “Avalon Baptist celebrates and rejoices in God’s great diversity,” Dr. Longley said. “We desire to provide a genuinely safe space and full involvement for all, including people who are LGBTQI.”
The church has announced its intention to transition its membership to the newly formed Open Baptists, an organization that holds an inclusive stance on marriage equality. Dr. Longley affirmed their ongoing commitment to serving the congregation and the wider community with love and inclusivity.
Mr. Brad Dalton, Secretary and Deacon of Avalon Baptist, reinforced this message by highlighting the presence of faithful LGBTQI followers within the church community. “There are many faithful followers of Jesus who are LGBTQI, and many have members of their family or extended family who are LGBTQI,” he stated. “Avalon Baptist follows the way of Christ in being open and genuinely welcoming and inclusive to all people.”
As Avalon Baptist embarks on this new chapter, the church leadership expressed their hope for continued dialogue and understanding within the broader Baptist community. Dr. Longley concluded, “We will continue to pray for the Association, as Avalon Baptist transfers membership to the newly formed Open Baptists.”
