Thorne Harbour Health, a prominent health organization serving the LGBTIQ+ community, has appointed Chad Hughes as its new Chief Executive Officer, following the departure of Simon Ruth late last year. Hughes, who has over 25 years of experience in both community and global health, will officially assume his role at the end of February 2026.
In his extensive career, Hughes has focused on public health initiatives that address critical issues such as HIV, drug and alcohol harm reduction, and LGBTIQA+ health. His appointment is seen as a strategic move to enhance Thorne Harbour Health’s commitment to addressing the evolving health needs of the communities it serves.
Hughes Aims to Strengthen Community Health Initiatives
“I am truly honored to step into the role of CEO,” Hughes stated regarding his new position. “Thorne Harbour Health has an incredible history of leading the community response to HIV and expanding that legacy.” He emphasized his eagerness to collaborate with community members, partners, and staff to further the health and well-being of LGBTIQA+ individuals and those living with HIV.
Thorne Harbour Health President Janet Jukes OAM expressed gratitude towards interim CEO Kent Burgess for his leadership during a notably busy period for the organization. This included significant events such as the Feast Festival, World AIDS Day, and the Midsumma Festival.
“We are excited to welcome Chad as our next CEO,” Jukes remarked. “He brings significant leadership experience at a pivotal moment for Thorne Harbour Health, as we safeguard the hard-fought gains won through decades of community advocacy.”
Looking Ahead to Future Initiatives
Hughes’s leadership is expected to usher in new strategies aimed at fostering progress and innovation in community-led healthcare. His extensive background in public health positions him well to navigate the complexities of the current health landscape, particularly in addressing the specific needs of LGBTIQA+ populations.
As Thorne Harbour Health prepares for this transition, the organization remains committed to advancing the health outcomes of its community, ensuring that the voices of those it serves continue to shape its initiatives. The appointment of Hughes marks a new chapter for Thorne Harbour Health, reinforcing its dedication to inclusivity and comprehensive care.
