On June 2025, over 100 individuals gathered at City Beach at 6:00 AM to participate in a chilly dip to honor the memory of Melissa Murdoch, a beloved mother, wife, daughter, and friend who tragically passed away from cancer. The group, known as Mel’s Mob, braved the cold waters not only to commemorate her life but also to raise funds and awareness for cancer research, successfully collecting more than $13,000.

Remembering Melissa Murdoch

In 2024, Melissa was at a pivotal point in her life, having built a loving family and established a fulfilling career as a burns nurse at Perth Children’s Hospital. A dedicated runner and swimmer, Melissa often began her mornings with a run followed by a swim at City Beach alongside her father, Robert Murdoch.

Her life took a devastating turn when she began experiencing persistent abdominal pain. After several months of consultations, her condition escalated, leading to an emergency room visit. Just weeks before her 48th birthday, Melissa received the heartbreaking diagnosis of cancer. Despite undergoing chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments, her health continued to decline, and she passed away surrounded by her loving family.

Impact on the Community

The loss of Melissa had a profound impact on her family, friends, colleagues, and all who knew her. Robert Murdoch expressed his grief, stating, “Melissa was so cruelly robbed of her future. Her future not only with her family but also in the nursing vocation she so much loved and enjoyed. Caring for the children and families of those needing health care at Perth Children’s Hospital came second only to her family.”

In response to her passing, Mel’s Mob emerged as a grassroots initiative to raise awareness about cancer and support ongoing research efforts. The community’s collective effort during the dip at City Beach serves as a testament to Melissa’s enduring legacy and the impact she had on those around her.

Through this event, participants not only honored Melissa’s memory but also contributed significantly to an important cause, ensuring that her spirit continues to inspire others in the fight against cancer.
