Concordia University is set to participate in the inaugural Annual Forum of the Advanced Air Mobility Institute on November 27, 2023, at the YMX Innovation Centre located in the International Aerocity of Mirabel, Quebec. This event aims to unite experts from various sectors, including industry, academia, and government, to explore the potential of drones and electric aircraft in transforming transportation both in Quebec and globally.
The concept of advanced air mobility involves leveraging innovative aircraft technologies, such as drones and small electric planes, to facilitate the efficient and sustainable movement of people and goods. These advancements hold promise for applications like emergency deliveries, regional transport, and traffic monitoring, contributing to reduced congestion and lower emissions in urban and remote regions.
Collaborative Efforts in Aviation Innovation
Established in 2024 by the SDG Innovation Network with backing from ADM Aéroports de Montréal, the Advanced Air Mobility Institute seeks to foster collaboration among researchers and professionals across Quebec to advance sustainable aviation solutions. The institute is co-led by Jean Marc Frayret of Polytechnique Montréal, who will oversee research initiatives, and Carole El Ayoubi, associate director of the Concordia Institute for Aerospace Design and Innovation (CIADI), who will focus on training efforts.
El Ayoubi emphasized the importance of this forum, stating, “This forum provides an opportunity to reflect collectively on how Quebec can develop advanced air mobility in a responsible way. Concordia’s contribution focuses on training and collaboration, ensuring that students and partners can work together on technologies that serve people and the environment.”
The forum will feature insights from notable speakers, including representatives from the International Civil Aviation Organization, NAV Canada, Jaunt Air Mobility, Laflamme Aero, and Hydro Québec. Additionally, a student showcase will highlight innovative ideas from emerging researchers, underscoring the educational aspect of the event.
About the Partners and Future Initiatives
The SDG Innovation Network is dedicated to promoting collaboration between universities and the private sector, aiming to accelerate advancements in sustainable manufacturing, digital transformation, and intelligent mobility. The YMX Innovation Centre serves as a hub for collaborative research and development, bringing together various stakeholders to foster innovation in aerospace and mobility.
Located within the International Aerocity of Mirabel, this zone is designed to integrate manufacturing, research, cargo operations, and training in aviation and mobility. Concordia University is also involved in the upcoming Collaborative Innovation Centre in Aerospace and Mobility (CCIAM) in Montreal’s Saint Laurent borough. This center will further facilitate partnerships among universities and industry players to promote research, innovation, and sustainable practices in the aerospace sector.
As the forum approaches, it promises to be a significant platform for dialogue on the integration of advanced air mobility technologies, paving the way for a more efficient and sustainable transportation landscape.
