A Croatian freediver has made history by setting a new world record for the longest-held breath. On June 14, 2023, Vitomir Maričić submerged himself in a pool after taking a final gulp of pure oxygen. He remained underwater for an astonishing 29 minutes and 3 seconds, surpassing the previous record by nearly five minutes. This remarkable achievement is officially recognized by Guinness World Records.
Maričić’s feat pushes the limits of human potential. Holding one’s breath for nearly half an hour is not only extraordinary but also highlights the stark contrast with marine mammals. For context, a bottlenose dolphin typically holds its breath for around 15 to 20 minutes, while harbor seals can replace up to 90 percent of the air in their lungs with each breath. In contrast, humans can only manage to replace about 20 percent, necessitating more frequent breaths to maintain oxygen levels.
To prepare for this record-breaking attempt, Maričić engaged in a rigorous oxygen-loading process. He inhaled pure oxygen for ten minutes prior to his dive, significantly increasing the oxygen concentration in his blood plasma. This preparation is crucial, as it enhances the body’s ability to sustain tissues with oxygen during prolonged periods without air. In his own words shared on an Instagram reel, Maričić noted that he began this attempt with nearly five times more oxygen in his body than the average person.
Even outside of this record, Maričić’s abilities are noteworthy. He can hold his breath for up to 10 minutes and 8 seconds under normal conditions. For comparison, the current record for unaided breath-holding stands at 11 minutes and 35 seconds, set by Branko Petrovic of Serbia in 2014. The average individual typically manages to hold their breath for only 30 to 90 seconds.
Maričić’s record attempt was not solely for personal achievement; it also aimed to raise awareness about ocean conservation efforts. By showcasing his extraordinary skills, he hopes to draw attention to the pressing issues facing marine environments. This philanthropic motivation complements his impressive athletic achievements, as he has already set multiple records related to freediving.
As Maričić continues to push the boundaries of what is possible, many are left to wonder if he will next target Petrovic’s record for unaided breath-holding. His recent success has certainly placed him on the global stage, inspiring both athletes and environmental advocates alike.
