Hundreds of motorbike enthusiasts gathered in Wollongong on March 17, 2024, to participate in the annual Black Dog Ride, a national event aimed at raising awareness for mental health issues and suicide prevention. The ride commenced from the North Wollongong Hotel, where riders assembled in solidarity to support a vital cause.

Andy Stewart, the Black Dog Ride Coordinator and director of the NSW South Coast Hogs, emphasized the significance of the event, stating, “It’s a national ride, so this ride is happening in a heap of places today to raise money.” This year, the ride aims to collect $10,000 for the charity, which supports mental health initiatives across Australia.

Statistics from the event highlight the urgent need for awareness. Each year, one in five Australians faces a mental health condition, with an average of nine Australians taking their own lives daily. The ride’s message resonates deeply, as participants unite not only for a casual ride but for a cause that affects countless families.

The motorbike procession followed a scenic route, starting at the North Wollongong Hotel and advancing towards Appin and Wilton before returning along Picton Road. Stewart noted, “We’re weaving our way around the back cause it’s a bit of a spider’s web to back out of here.” This year’s turnout included 115 registered riders, with hopes of reaching 140 participants by the event’s conclusion.

As part of the Black Dog Ride’s mission, resources for mental health support were highlighted. Individuals in crisis can reach out to Lifeline at 13 11 14 or the Suicide Call Back Service at 1300 659 467. Additionally, those grieving the loss of a loved one to suicide can contact StandBy Support After Suicide at 1300 727 247 or Thirrili Indigenous Postvention Support at 1800 805 801 for assistance.

The event not only raises funds but also fosters a sense of community among participants who share a commitment to mental health advocacy. Through the power of their shared passion for motorcycling, riders in Wollongong send a strong message about the importance of mental health awareness and support.
