Justine Ramsay, the founder of the Australian activewear brand Gia Active, has announced the tragic death of her younger sister, Giaan Ramsay, who passed away at the age of 17. In a poignant social media tribute, Justine described her sister as her “soulmate” and “warrior,” expressing deep sorrow over the loss. Giaan’s passing has sparked conversations about mental health and the support systems available to young individuals.

In an emotional post on Instagram, the 27-year-old entrepreneur from the Gold Coast, Queensland, reflected on the profound impact Giaan had on her life. Justine wrote, “My beautiful angel sister, I can’t even believe I’m sitting here writing this; it still doesn’t feel real that you are gone.” She emphasized the unique bond they shared, stating, “Anyone who knows me knows my sister Giaan was my whole entire world.”

While the specific circumstances of Giaan’s death remain undisclosed, Justine has voiced her belief that her sister was let down by the medical system. “She was failed by the medical system, and I will never stop fighting for her,” she declared. Justine’s determination to advocate for her sister’s memory highlights the ongoing challenges faced by individuals struggling with mental health issues.

Justine depicted Giaan as “loving, thoughtful, and the funniest person I’ve ever met” in her heartfelt tribute. She described her sister’s vibrant spirit and how she brought joy to those around her. “She would make my belly laugh every day,” Justine recalled. “We used to say she looked like a doll because she was just perfect in every way.”

In the wake of this loss, the Ramsay family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses and to reunite relatives from South Africa. Launched on July 30, 2023, the campaign has raised nearly $35,000 within days, demonstrating the widespread support from the community. Justine thanked supporters on the fundraising page, stating, “We love you, our beautiful Giaan.”

The story of Gia Active is intertwined with Justine’s personal journey. In a recent video shared by the brand, she discussed how her passion for activewear emerged from her own experiences. A severe injury two years ago sidelined her from sports for over a year and a half, leaving her feeling isolated. “I just like lost who I was because all I’ve ever known is running,” she explained.

Justine founded Gia Active as a way to channel her pain into a purposeful venture. The brand is named after Giaan, embodying her spirit of perseverance and resilience. “I want Gia Active to not only reflect my passion for sport and activewear but to honour my sister and anyone else who has faced mental health battles,” Justine stated.

In a commitment to mental health advocacy, Gia Active has pledged to donate 5 percent of proceeds from its latest restock to the Black Dog Institute, an organization dedicated to mental health research and education. This initiative reflects Justine’s desire to create a positive impact in Giaan’s memory.

As Justine concluded her tribute, she expressed both her grief and her resolve to keep her sister’s memory alive. “Everything I do and everything I am is because of her. She taught me strength, resilience, courage—and what’s truly important in life. Forever 17. Rest in peace, my sweet girl.”
