The city of Melbourne has been chosen to host the prestigious World Conference on Lung Cancer in 2029. This event, recognized as the largest lung cancer conference globally, will take place at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) and is anticipated to attract over 6,500 experts from approximately 100 countries. The conference is expected to contribute more than $34 million to the local economy, signifying a substantial economic impact for the state.
The conference is organized by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), which is the only global organization dedicated exclusively to lung cancer research and the eradication of other thoracic malignancies. The successful bid to host the congress was facilitated by the Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB), in collaboration with the IASLC and Cancer Council Victoria. Support from the state government and Business Events Australia further bolstered the efforts to secure this significant gathering.

Julia Swanson, chief executive of the Melbourne Convention Bureau, expressed enthusiasm for the announcement. She stated, “Hosting international medical conferences here not only drives knowledge exchange and collaboration but also delivers significant economic and social benefits to the city and the wider community.” The conference is anticipated to foster an environment of collaboration among leading experts, which could lead to advancements in lung cancer research and treatment.
Todd Harper, chief executive of Cancer Council Victoria, noted that Australia has been at the forefront of global initiatives aimed at reducing the burden of lung cancer. He described the selection of Melbourne as an appropriate choice for the event, emphasizing that “bringing the world’s leading experts together here provides a powerful opportunity to accelerate progress and ultimately save more lives from lung cancer.”
The gathering will serve as a platform for sharing the latest research, discussing innovative treatment options, and exploring collaborative strategies to tackle lung cancer effectively. With increasing global awareness and a dedicated focus on lung cancer, this conference is poised to play a crucial role in shaping future research directions.
As the date approaches, Melbourne will prepare to welcome thousands of delegates, signaling its commitment to being a hub for medical conferences and research. The World Conference on Lung Cancer 2029 is not only an opportunity for professional development but also a chance for the city to showcase its capabilities in hosting large-scale international events.
