A new mobile breast screening service has been launched in West Gosford, aiming to address a significant gap in breast cancer screenings among women in New South Wales. Currently, about 50% of women aged 50-74 in the region are overdue for these crucial health checks. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to increase awareness and accessibility, particularly following the surge in appointments during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 2024.
Member for Gosford, Liesl Tesch, highlighted the importance of maintaining regular screening appointments. “A record 36,500 women across NSW booked in for their breast screen during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 2024, with hopes that 2025 statistics will continue this trend,” Ms Tesch stated. She urged the community to keep the momentum going as the month concludes, emphasizing the critical role of awareness in early detection.
The new mobile BreastScreen van is located at 6 Racecourse Rd, West Gosford, offering free parking in the adjacent Council carpark. Ms Tesch shared her personal connection to the cause, noting, “I know only too well about the importance of regular breast screens after my beautiful mum died from breast cancer.” She underscored that a brief appointment could be life-saving, explaining, “An appointment only takes 20 minutes every two years, and it could be a real turning point.”
Ms Tesch recognized that many women often prioritize their busy lives over their health. “I encourage you to put yourself first and set aside time to look after your health. We can only be there for those around us if we are first there for ourselves,” she said.
The emphasis on self-care is critical, especially in light of the challenges women face in managing their health amid daily responsibilities. “It’s easy to lose track of that important reminder letter,” Ms Tesch noted, urging women to “pull out that BreastScreen paperwork and book in.”
Bookings are now open, and interested individuals can schedule their appointments by visiting the official BreastScreen website or by calling 13 20 50. The introduction of this mobile service aims to make breast cancer screenings more accessible, encouraging women to take proactive steps towards their health and well-being.
