In April 2024, RALLY4EVER launched an initiative in Condobolin, Australia, designed to rejuvenate local interest in tennis while promoting social connections, mental well-being, and physical health. The event took place on Monday, April 15, at the newly upgraded tennis facilities and was supported by the Condobolin Aboriginal Health Service.
The programme attracted numerous community members eager to learn tennis skills and participate in a barbecue, fostering a spirit of camaraderie. RALLY4EVER aims to make tennis accessible to everyone, providing free coaching and resources through a dedicated team of volunteers and professionals.
Louise Pleming, the CEO of RALLY4EVER and a former professional player, emphasized the organisation’s commitment to community engagement. She stated, “The RALLY4EVER community program gives people the opportunity to learn new skills and make new friends, motivating them to keep coming back each week once they start playing regularly.” This flexibility allows participants to join the programme at their convenience, enhancing community involvement.
The origins of RALLY4EVER are rooted in a poignant encounter. Pleming met a homeless man named Brian while volunteering at a soup kitchen, who expressed a desire to play tennis. This interaction not only led to a lasting friendship but also inspired Pleming to expand her efforts to help others in similar situations.
Following a successful pilot programme in December 2023 across several towns in Western NSW, including Condobolin, Lake Cargelligo, and Parkes, RALLY4EVER returned in April to establish ongoing youth tennis initiatives in the region. The organisation recognised the potential impact of its programmes on young people in these remote communities.
RALLY4EVER’s recent visit included discussions with Aboriginal Health Services, Elders, and Council members. These conversations highlighted the need for sustainable programming that addresses the challenges faced by youth in the area. The organisation plans to implement programmes in Bourke, Cobar, Coonamble, Dubbo, Girilambone, Gulargambone, Lake Cargelligo, Nyngan, Walgett, Warren, and Condobolin, which will serve as a hub for coordinating these efforts.
While the primary focus remains on youth, RALLY4EVER is committed to inclusivity, ensuring that programmes cater to all community members. The aim is to train local volunteers to sustain these initiatives throughout the school term, bolstering the community’s capacity to support its members.
By visiting towns like Condobolin, RALLY4EVER provides essential skills and resources necessary for establishing long-lasting tennis programmes. Through its initiatives, RALLY4EVER seeks to empower communities by promoting not only physical activity but also social interaction and well-being, making a meaningful impact in the lives of many.
The focus on tennis as a means of connection and health reflects the core mission of RALLY4EVER, demonstrating the powerful role sports can play in fostering community spirit and resilience.
