The state of Victoria has marked a significant milestone by formalising a historic treaty with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, the first of its kind in Australia. This landmark agreement was officially established on March 22, 2024, and will empower the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria as a permanent representative and decision-making body for Indigenous communities within the state.

The Treaty for First Peoples comes after extensive consultations between Indigenous leaders and the Victorian government, reflecting years of advocacy and negotiation. The agreement aims to enhance the decision-making power of Aboriginal peoples in the region and is seen as a crucial step towards reconciliation and recognition of Indigenous rights.

Daniel Knapp, the Executive Director for First Nations Wellbeing and Engagement at headspace, expressed his congratulations to the First Peoples’ Assembly on this momentous occasion. “Congratulations to the First Peoples Assembly of Victoria and all involved in bringing Treaty to life,” Knapp stated. “This milestone reflects what can be achieved when truth, respect, courage, and collaboration guide the way, setting an example for other states and territories to follow.”

The establishment of the treaty is expected to foster a deeper understanding and respect for Indigenous cultures and rights across Australia. It serves as a beacon of hope for many young Indigenous Australians, providing them with a stronger voice in matters that affect their communities and futures.

Knapp further emphasized the importance of this treaty, stating, “It’s a proud moment for Victoria and for First Nations people across the country, and I’m sure it gives strength and hope to all young people.”

As Victoria leads the way with this historic treaty, it stands as a pivotal moment in Australia’s journey towards healing and unity, encouraging other regions to engage in similar dialogues and actions to support Indigenous rights and representation.
