The state of Victoria has announced a significant step in its clean energy transition by scheduling an auction for offshore wind energy. This auction, which will focus on an initial capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW), represents a pivotal moment in the region’s commitment to renewable energy and aims to replace aging coal power with sustainable solutions.
The announcement has been hailed as a clear indication that Victoria is dedicated to delivering the renewable energy future that local communities have long advocated for. According to Wendy Farmer, the organiser for Friends of the Earth, offshore wind presents a unique opportunity that could generate approximately 6,000 jobs while attracting billions in investment. Farmer noted that Gippsland, known for its substantial energy contributions over decades, is ideally positioned to become the center of Australia’s renewable energy economy.
This initiative is supported by the emerging Electricity Services Entry Mechanism, which aims to provide the necessary investment certainty for the industry. Communities can also plan for a just and prosperous transition, as the region moves toward a cleaner energy landscape. Farmer emphasized the importance of this project, stating, “The projected 6,000 jobs and billions in investment is a massive opportunity for the region, and a meaningful pathway for workers and families to remain at the centre of Victoria’s energy story.”
The transition to offshore wind is expected to enhance energy security and stabilize the electricity grid as coal power begins to retire. Farmer remarked that the ongoing shift towards renewable energy has already contributed to lowered wholesale electricity prices, proving crucial for maintaining energy availability during peak demands.
As the design for the auction is finalized, Farmer and Friends of the Earth have urged both government and industry stakeholders to engage closely with First Nations, local communities, and businesses. This collaboration is essential to ensure that the benefits of offshore wind development are distributed fairly and transparently throughout the region. Strong community engagement and clear, science-based information are critical to fostering trust and recognition of Gippsland’s role in leading Australia’s offshore wind sector.
The announcement signals a broader commitment by Victoria to set the pace for the country’s offshore wind industry. As the state moves forward, it aims to create a cleaner, more resilient, and cost-effective energy future that meets the needs of both communities and environmental goals.
