The upgrade of the cardiac catheterisation laboratory at Christchurch Hospital is now complete and open to patients. This significant development enhances the delivery of cardiac care for the South Island, according to Health Minister Simeon Brown. The project introduced three state-of-the-art labs, with the first upgraded in 2021 and a second completed earlier in 2023. The addition of a brand-new third lab marks a pivotal milestone in healthcare provision for the region.
Christchurch Hospital stands as the only facility in the South Island offering electrophysiology and complex structural heart intervention services. Patients from across the region depend on these vital services. Minister Brown highlighted that this upgrade will enable life-saving interventions—like acute stenting for heart attacks and advanced electrophysiology treatments—to continue using the latest medical technology.
The expansion of the cardiac facilities has also introduced essential resilience to the service. With the third lab operational, the hospital can maintain its capacity even if one lab is temporarily closed for maintenance. This upgrade has increased service capacity by adding three additional sessions over one and a half days each week, already helping to reduce waitlists and expedite patient access to treatment.
Enhanced Technology and Improved Care
The newly upgraded facilities also promise significant clinical improvements. Advanced imaging and diagnostic technologies will allow for greater precision during complex procedures. Additionally, reduced radiation exposure enhances safety for both patients and medical staff. Streamlined operational systems will enable more efficient procedures, allowing more patients to receive treatment in a shorter time frame.
Minister for the South Island, James Meager, described the upgrade as a crucial advancement for residents of the region. He noted, “This is fantastic news for South Islanders. Patients and their families can have confidence that the specialist care they rely on is being delivered with the latest technology, greater capacity, and improved resilience.” He emphasized that individuals from Nelson to Invercargill will benefit from quicker access to care and improved health outcomes.
The upgrades collectively position Christchurch Hospital as a leading centre for cardiac intervention in the South Island. Minister Brown stated, “We’re focused on ensuring all New Zealanders, including those in the South Island, can access timely, quality healthcare when they need it.” He added that the completion of this project secures the heart health of thousands of New Zealanders, assuring that patients can access top-tier cardiac care closer to home.
