US authorities are investigating the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was killed by a single gunshot during a public speaking event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on March 6, 2024. The FBI has recovered a bolt-action rifle believed to be the weapon used in the attack and has released images of a “person of interest” described as “college age.”

Kirk, aged 31 and known for his strong ties to former President Donald Trump, was addressing a crowd of approximately 3,000 people during his talk titled “Prove Me Wrong.” Witnesses reported that the shooting occurred as Kirk responded to an audience member’s question about mass shootings. The bullet struck him in the neck, causing chaos in the audience as attendees fled the scene in panic.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox characterized the incident as a political assassination, highlighting the gravity of the situation. Investigators revealed that the shooter had arrived on campus shortly before the event commenced, utilizing security camera footage to piece together the sequence of events. The suspect was seen accessing a rooftop area before firing at Kirk. Following the incident, the shooter reportedly jumped off the roof and escaped into a nearby neighborhood.

In the aftermath, officials have cordoned off the campus, which remained largely deserted with classes cancelled. Investigators are meticulously combing through the area, including the roof and surrounding woods, for evidence. Robert Bohls, the FBI special agent in charge, indicated that they found a “high-powered bolt-action” rifle in a wooded section nearby, alongside palm prints and footprints that may provide further clues.

According to Beau Mason, the Utah Public Safety Commissioner, the shooter appeared to blend in well on the university campus. The FBI is circulating grainy images of the individual, who was seen wearing a black top, dark sunglasses, and a baseball cap. Reports from the Wall Street Journal suggest that the shooter may have engraved messages related to transgender and anti-fascist ideologies on their ammunition, although this information is still under analysis.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities continue to seek information from the public that may lead to the identification and capture of the suspect. The tragic event underscores ongoing concerns about violence in political discourse and its implications for public safety.
