Mark Speakman has stepped down as the leader of the New South Wales (NSW) Liberal Party, prompting speculation about his successor. His resignation, effective immediately, comes as the party prepares for the upcoming election scheduled for March 2027. Federal Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce welcomed the change, stating that the NSW Liberals “had to make a change” to present a robust challenge to the governing Labor Party.

Joyce criticized Speakman’s leadership, suggesting that he did not successfully counter the policies of Premier Chris Minns. “Mark wasn’t going too far,” Joyce remarked during an interview with Sky News, describing the party’s situation as “like a truck on the side of the road with flat tyres.” He emphasized the need for Kellie Sloane, the presumptive successor, to formulate clear and bold policies that differentiate the Liberal Party from Labor.

Former NSW Premier Nick Greiner praised Speakman as a dedicated public servant, highlighting his integrity during a challenging time for the party. Greiner described Speakman’s resignation as a “gracious and humble act,” emphasizing that he has always prioritized the people of NSW. “Mark took on the leadership following the 2023 election and has led the party with integrity,” Greiner stated.

Despite stepping down from the leadership role, Speakman intends to remain in parliament and contest the next election, though he is uncertain about his position on the frontbench. His leadership tenure has been marked by efforts to navigate the party through turbulent political waters, and he has been recognized for his commitment to public service.

As the party convenes to elect a new leader, Sloane, a first-term MP representing Vaucluse, is widely regarded as the frontrunner for the position. Her elevation to leadership would mark a significant moment for the NSW Liberals, as she steps into the role almost three years after her initial election to parliament.

The dynamics within the party are shifting, and Sloane will face the challenge of revitalizing the NSW Liberals’ platform ahead of the critical 2027 election. As the party prepares for this transition, the focus will undoubtedly be on how Sloane articulates a vision that resonates with voters looking for an alternative to the current government.
