Kelmscott Senior High School in Western Australia has officially opened a new sports hall, providing students with upgraded facilities designed to enhance their educational experience. The opening ceremony, held today, was attended by Education Minister Sabine Winton and Armadale MLA Dr Tony Buti. The project, which cost $12.3 million, is part of the State Government’s commitment made during the 2021 election to improve educational infrastructure.
The newly constructed sports hall features facilities for various sports including basketball, netball, volleyball, and badminton. It also includes a fitness centre, toilets, changing rooms, and staff areas. In addition to the sports hall, the existing gym has been refurbished and transformed into a performing arts centre. This modern facility now boasts a shared drama and dance studio, green rooms, and a dedicated entry with kitchenette facilities.
Moreover, refurbishment work has resulted in a new music centre equipped with a music ensemble room and practice rooms. An existing area at the school has also been converted into a state-of-the-art STEM facility, reflecting a commitment to integrating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics into the curriculum.
The architectural design of the new facilities was executed by Armstrong Collective Architects, while construction was carried out by PS Structures Pty Ltd. The final phase of this extensive project is expected to be completed by December 2025.
During the opening, Minister Winton expressed her enthusiasm for the new facilities, stating, “Our government is committed to providing students with modern facilities, so they can have the best possible learning opportunities.” She emphasized the significance of the upgrades for future generations, noting that Kelmscott Senior High School was established in 1973.
Dr Buti echoed her sentiments, highlighting the tangible benefits these upgrades will bring to the school community. “This is a terrific result for the Kelmscott Senior High School community, with the opening of these new facilities,” he remarked. As a former student of the school, he underscored the importance of creating opportunities for students to develop their skills both inside and outside the classroom.
The opening of the sports hall and the accompanying facilities marks a significant milestone for the school, reflecting the Cook Government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure in locations where families reside. As students begin the school year with access to new sports and arts spaces, the impact of these investments is expected to resonate throughout the local community.
