Fans attending events at Optus Stadium in Western Australia can look forward to an enhanced experience starting in the 2026 AFL season. Beginning with the Fremantle vs Melbourne match on March 21 and the West Coast vs North Melbourne match on March 22, the stadium will introduce full-strength beer in general public areas during major events. This change will provide patrons with more beverage options, complementing the existing mid-strength selections.

Currently, 4.5% beer is restricted to specific member and hospitality areas, which serve a limited number of attendees. In contrast, the 13.5% wine has been available throughout the venue. The decision to expand the beverage offerings follows a detailed review that involved consultations with key stakeholders, including regulatory bodies and event hirers, ensuring that Optus Stadium aligns with other major stadiums across Australia.

Reusable Cup System Launches at Major Stadium

In a move towards sustainability, the stadium’s operator, VenuesLive, has awarded a contract to FSG NickNack, a division of the FrothStop Group, to implement a reusable cup system. This system will introduce dedicated return bins throughout the venue, allowing for cups to be collected, washed, sanitized, and reused for future events. With this initiative, Optus Stadium will become the first major stadium in Australia to provide a fully reusable drink cup option for all patrons.

A trial conducted during the 2024 AFL season demonstrated strong support among fans, with many reporting a superior drinking experience compared to disposable cups. FSG NickNack’s technology has proven effective internationally, having successfully supplied cups for events accommodating over 100,000 people in a single day, as well as handling the washing of 700,000 cups during a five-day festival.

With the introduction of the reusable cup system, the price of a beer at the stadium will increase by 40 cents. This change reflects the broader strategy of the Cook Government to diversify the economy by promoting Perth as a premier destination for entertainment and sports.

Officials Praise Enhancements for Fans and Environment

Rita Saffioti, the Sport and Recreation Minister, emphasized the importance of these changes in enhancing the fan experience, stating, “Optus Stadium is a world-class venue, and these changes are about improving the experience for fans and offering more choice, wherever they’re seated.” She highlighted the significance of aligning the stadium with other major venues while maintaining a focus on safety and responsible service.

Environment Minister Matthew Swinbourn remarked on the environmental impact of the reusable cup initiative, stating, “Rolling out reusable drink cups for all patrons at Optus Stadium shows how large venues can cut waste in a practical way without detracting from the fan experience.” This initiative is part of the Cook Labor Government’s Plastic Free Riverpark Grant Program, aimed at reducing single-use plastics and protecting local waterways.

The proposed changes at Optus Stadium not only enhance the experience for fans but also underscore a commitment to sustainability and responsible practices in large venues.
