The iconic Station Pier in Victoria has reopened to the public for the first time since 2020, following extensive maintenance activities. The Allan Labor Government announced the completion of this program, which aims to support the operation of the shipping and cruise ship facility for years to come. Annually, the facility welcomes approximately 50,000 passengers and crew, marking it as a vital part of the region’s maritime infrastructure.
Community Access and Ongoing Maintenance
Public access to Station Pier will be available on weekends during daylight hours, allowing local residents, tourists, and recreational fishers to stroll along the pier or fish from its edge. This access will continue on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays throughout the summer, provided there are no active cruise ships docked at the facility. Maintenance work will still proceed at other times to ensure the pier remains operational for the cruise industry.
The maintenance program included significant upgrades to various components of the facility. Key improvements consisted of the refurbishment of the pier’s Gatehouse, structural pylons, electrical systems, corrosion protection, and the wharf deck. While pedestrian access will be limited to the central access way leading to the southern end of the pier, there will be an accessible entry point for vehicles at that same end.
Future Plans for Station Pier
The Labor Government is collaborating with relevant departments and agencies to develop plans for the future of Station Pier. This strategy aims to preserve the pier’s heritage while accommodating the growing needs of the cruise shipping industry. The facility includes active shipping berths, two terminal buildings, a gatehouse, a former railway station building, and a small kiosk, all of which contribute to its significance in the community.
Minister for Ports and Freight, Melissa Horne, expressed her enthusiasm for the reopening, stating, “These vital works will come as welcome news for Victorians, particularly the community and recreational fishers eager to enjoy what the pier has to offer.” Similarly, Nina Taylor, Member for Albert Park, highlighted the pier’s importance, noting that it serves as a valuable asset for both local residents and visitors, attracting people to this beautiful part of Victoria.
The reopening of Station Pier not only revitalizes a cherished local landmark but also reinforces its role in supporting the cruise industry and enhancing the recreational opportunities available to the community. As the summer season approaches, the pier stands as a symbol of connection, bringing together locals and tourists alike.
