The construction of the new Sydney Fish Market has officially concluded, marking a significant milestone for one of the most ambitious projects undertaken on Sydney Harbour. The keys have been handed over to Sydney Fish Market Pty Ltd, which will now oversee the final fit-outs of the facility in preparation for its grand opening on 19 January 2026.

This iconic structure, which extends over water, joins the ranks of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House as a remarkable feat of engineering. Built on 481 marine piles and utilizing 6,000 tonnes of steel reinforcement, the new market features an impressive glass façade that will allow visitors to witness the excitement of live fish auctions. It is projected to attract over 6 million visitors annually, contributing significantly to both local tourism and the economy.

Innovative Features and Sustainability

The design includes over 400 roof cassettes and 594 glulam timber beams, all transported by barge from Glebe Island. Notably, the project has set a new standard for sustainability, eliminating more than 5,650 truck movements on local roads. The innovative roof design harnesses natural sunlight, collects rainwater for recycling, and incorporates solar panels to reduce energy consumption. The roof can also be illuminated with multi-coloured LED lights for special events.

More than just a marketplace, the new facility will feature over 6,000 square metres of accessible public space. It integrates cultural and historical storytelling, highlighting the area’s First Nations heritage through five creative installations. Additionally, the construction includes marine life support systems such as seawall tiles, coral panels, and hanging fish habitats in Blackwattle Bay.

Economic Impact and Future Prospects

The construction of the new market created over 700 jobs, with the facility expected to sustain the same number of ongoing roles. Contracts worth approximately $670 million were awarded to Australian businesses, demonstrating significant local economic investment. The new facility will double the current retail space, offering a diverse range of seafood traders and dining options, from casual takeaways to premium waterfront restaurants.

Renowned chefs like Luke Nguyen and Ho Jiak are already on board for the market’s opening, while Sushi Oe, a two-hatted fine diner, plans to expand its offerings in Pyrmont. Other establishments, including GetSashimi and Ichie, are set to introduce innovative dining experiences such as a large-scale sushi train and the first hamayaki seafood barbecue in Sydney.

The project was designed by 3XN/GXN Architects in collaboration with BVN and Aspect Studios. NSW Premier Chris Minns reflected on the completion, stating, “This world-class building will attract millions of visitors each year and provide an enormous boost to our economy.”

The Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Paul Scully, emphasized that retailers are now finalizing their spaces to ensure readiness for the public opening. Moreover, Steve Kamper, the Minister for Lands and Property, expressed excitement about the facility’s potential, noting its emphasis on sustainability and cultural connection.

With construction now complete, Sydney Fish Market CEO Daniel Jarosch expressed enthusiasm about the transition to the new facility, stating, “We’re excited to see our retailers’ impressive fit-outs come to life ahead of opening early in the new year.” The existing fish market will continue to operate through the festive season, providing a final opportunity for visitors to enjoy its offerings before the transition to the new landmark.
