Premier Jeremy Rockliff expressed profound condolences to the people of New South Wales following a tragic attack that targeted the Jewish community during a Hanukkah celebration. In a statement released on December 15, 2023, he reached out to Premier Chris Minns, extending support to those affected, including families who lost loved ones and the wider community.
Rockliff commended the bravery of community members who rushed to assist one another amidst the chaos, acknowledging the heroism of first responders. “The very best of people within this country – citizens supporting each other and, of course, the first responders who so bravely looked after those injured,” he said.
The incident, described by Rockliff as an act of “evil antisemitism” and terrorism, sparked a strong condemnation of violence within Australia. He stated, “There is no place in Australia or anywhere for this violence.”
In response to the attack, Rockliff convened the Emergency Management Committee of Cabinet, which includes Tasmanian Police Commissioner Donna Adams. He assured that the Tasmanian Police are prepared to assist New South Wales should additional resources be necessary.
The Tasmanian Police maintain a strong relationship with the Tasmanian Jewish community and are committed to working with event organizers to prioritize safety. Rockliff mentioned that he has spoken with leaders within the Tasmanian Jewish community, offering his sincere condolences and support.
“We will wrap our arms around the Tasmanian Jewish community. We are there to support each other in what is a time of deep distress and deep hurt,” he affirmed.
The Premier also reassured Tasmanians that their state remains a safe place. “We will do everything needed to ensure that Tasmanians both feel and are safe in their community,” he said.
For those experiencing distress related to the incident, immediate support is available through Tasmanian Lifeline at 1800 984 434.
