Large crowds gathered in central Rome on October 7, 2023, for the fourth consecutive day of protests in support of Palestine. Demonstrators mobilized following Israel’s interception of an international flotilla attempting to deliver aid to Gaza, which resulted in the detention of several activists. The protesters, many carrying banners and Palestinian flags, marched past the iconic Colosseum, chanting slogans such as “Free Palestine.” Organizers anticipated that the event would draw at least one million participants.
Among those demonstrating was Francesco Galtieri, a 65-year-old musician from Rome. He expressed the importance of individual mobilization, stating, “If we don’t all mobilize, then nothing will change.” Since the Israeli blockade of the flotilla began late on October 4, protests have erupted across Europe and beyond, but Italy has witnessed daily demonstrations in multiple cities.
Widespread Support and Government Criticism
On October 6, Italian unions initiated a general strike in solidarity with the flotilla, leading to demonstrations nationwide that reportedly attracted over two million people, according to organizers. However, the Italian interior ministry estimated attendance at around 400,000.
The protests have drawn criticism from Italy’s right-wing government. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni remarked that some participants appeared to use the protests as an excuse to extend their weekend. Additionally, she condemned a recent incident where graffiti appeared on a statue of the late Pope John Paul II outside Rome’s main train station, where pro-Palestinian groups have held a protest picket. Meloni described this act as “shameful,” asserting that those who claim to advocate for peace should not insult a figure known for his contributions to peace.
The ongoing protests have sparked a vigorous debate within Italy, highlighting differing views on foreign policy and humanitarian efforts regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict. As demonstrations continue, the situation remains fluid, with organizers planning further actions in the days ahead.
