Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson was remembered by thousands during a heartfelt service on September 5, 2023, in Melbourne. The gathering marked a tragic farewell for the veteran policeman, who died on August 26, just days before his planned retirement. Approximately 3,000 mourners, including his partner, Sergeant Lisa Thompson, attended the funeral, with many more participating online to pay their respects.

The emotional ceremony took place at the police academy where Thompson began his career on September 14, 1987, at the age of 21. His partner spoke passionately about their time together, recalling how their meeting in 2016 changed her life. “Words cannot convey the depth of sorrow and grief that his loss brings,” she stated, expressing gratitude for their last weekend together, which she described as the best.

She shared how Thompson encouraged her to be brave in difficult times, declaring, “I will love you, I will cherish every moment that I spent with you.”

Growing up in Bendigo, Thompson was known for his adventurous spirit. His sister, Lois Kirk, reminisced about his love for the outdoors, which included camping and fishing, and recalled a childhood incident when he was accidentally shot in the leg. “He was our golden boy who could do no wrong,” she said, highlighting the pride their parents felt when he graduated from the police academy.

Throughout his career, Thompson was recognized for his significant contributions, including the safe return of a four-year-old kidnapping victim and efforts against abalone poaching. He joined the Wangaratta Crime Investigation Unit in July 2007 and was involved in numerous high-profile investigations in the region.

Colleagues paid tribute to his character and dedication to duty. Detective Senior Constable Tim Doyle described him as a reliable partner, stating, “If you needed something found at a search warrant, you took Thommo with you.” He emphasized the danger Thompson often faced, saying, “Thommo, you went through the door first and I owe you my life for that.”

The camaraderie among officers was evident as many shared stories about Thompson’s fearless adventures. Jason Williams, a friend and fellow officer, recounted moments of Thompson’s daring nature, including jumping into crocodile-infested waters and running through grass barefoot while chasing snakes. “Every day was an adventure,” Williams remarked.

A large police presence marked the funeral, with officers lining the streets to salute as Thompson’s coffin was carried away from the chapel. The service reflected the profound impact Thompson had on his colleagues and community, as they remembered him not just as a policeman but as a beloved friend and family member.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Thompson’s death is ongoing, with police actively seeking information about the incident that took place in Porepunkah. Many attendees expressed their determination to honor his legacy by continuing the work he so passionately dedicated his life to.

In a world where the risks of policing are ever-present, Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson’s commitment to serving others will not be forgotten. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who loved him and the community he protected.
