A comprehensive analysis focusing on workforce pressures in the agricultural sector is set to commence in Australia, particularly examining the Darling Downs and Toowoomba regions. The study, spearheaded by AgriFutures Australia in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, aims to address the unique challenges faced by one of the country’s most productive agricultural areas.
The Darling Downs and Toowoomba are among five regions selected for the Strategic Analysis of Regional Workforce Pressures in Australian Agriculture. This area is known for its diverse agricultural output, which includes grains, dairy, eggs, horticulture, and significant feedlot operations. However, the region is grappling with intense competition for labour from rapidly growing sectors such as health, manufacturing, construction, and the emerging AgTech industry.
Simon Vincent, General Manager of Rural Futures at AgriFutures Australia, emphasized the significance of the Toowoomba and Darling Downs region in the national agricultural landscape. He stated, “The workforce challenges are both unique and highly instructive for national planning.”
The research will involve direct engagement with local employers, employees, and community leaders to identify effective practices and critical pressure points within the agricultural workforce. Vincent added that understanding these dynamics is essential for supporting the region’s diverse agricultural sectors effectively.
Engaging Stakeholders for Comprehensive Insights
The initiative aims to foster collaboration among a wide range of stakeholders, including training providers, employers, and local councils. This inclusive approach is intended to ensure that all aspects of the workforce ecosystem are considered in the research. Vincent noted, “We want to make sure every part of the workforce ecosystem is part of the study.”
The findings from this analysis are expected to provide valuable insights into how best to support the region’s agricultural workforce going forward. The final report is scheduled for release in mid 2026, and it is anticipated to inform policy and planning decisions that impact the agricultural sector.
As Australia continues to deal with evolving workforce dynamics, this research will play a crucial role in shaping the future of agriculture in the Darling Downs and beyond. By addressing these workforce challenges, stakeholders hope to enhance productivity and sustainability in one of Australia’s key food production areas.
