australians-face-holiday-stress-amid-rising-costs-this-christmas

New research indicates that a significant number of Australians are experiencing stress this Christmas due to ongoing cost of living pressures. After three years marked by rising inflation, many households are grappling with increased expenses for essentials like food, housing, and energy. A study commissioned by IGA reveals that an alarming 87 percent of Australians are concerned about costs during this festive season.

The IGA spokesperson, Heather Howell, highlighted that 68 percent of Australians are actively seeking ways to reduce grocery expenses as they face rising electricity and petrol prices. “Christmas is really just a continuation of that,” Howell stated, emphasizing the need for consumers to reassess their spending. She noted that while many aim to create an impressive festive atmosphere, people are increasingly finding ways to do so without breaking the bank.

### Savvy Spending Strategies

Howell pointed out that many shoppers are opting for home brand products to manage their budgets effectively. “Home brand products are a really great way to save on all of your staples,” she explained. Consumers are encouraged to consider cost-effective alternatives for essential items, such as flour and sugar, particularly when baking for Christmas celebrations.

Additionally, Howell mentioned that shoppers are becoming more price-conscious by comparing costs across different supermarkets. “People are actively shopping around and looking to find the best value,” she said. Many are also simplifying their Christmas menus by selecting ingredients that can be used across multiple dishes, allowing for both time and cost savings.

Frozen desserts, such as cheesecakes or pavlova bases, are becoming popular choices as they provide convenience while still allowing families to enjoy festive treats without extensive preparation.

### Planning Ahead for Joyful Celebrations

Planning Christmas menus early is another strategy Howell suggests to avoid overspending. “Coming together is really important,” she stated, adding that families are making smarter choices to help keep costs down while still enjoying the festive spirit.

“People are realizing that you don’t have to spend a fortune to have an amazing Christmas,” Howell concluded. As Australians navigate the challenges of the current economic climate, finding joy in the holiday season may require some creativity and careful planning, but it is certainly within reach.
