A new chapter for the Australian rice industry has begun with the start of construction on a state-of-the-art rice breeding facility in Leeton. The facility, which represents a significant investment of approximately $10 million, is expected to be operational by mid-2026. It aims to enhance water productivity and ensure the long-term viability of rice farming in Australia.

Dr. Georgina Pengilley, Chief Executive Officer of Rice Breeding Australia (RBA), emphasized the importance of this initiative. “We are establishing what will be a world-leading rice research and development facility, needed to drive genetic improvement in Australian rice to sustain the future of the industry,” she stated. The facility will be funded through growers’ levy funds, ensuring that it remains a resource for the agricultural community.

RBA was established in 2022 through a collaboration between AgriFutures Australia, SunRice Group, and the Ricegrowers Association of Australia. The organization is dedicated to enhancing water productivity, a critical factor for the sustainability of rice cultivation in Australia. The new facility will be located on a 13-hectare greenfield site, and its first phase will include a large glasshouse complex and a 3-hectare bird-proof enclosed plant breeding nursery.

Funding for this initial phase has been secured through rice levies managed by AgriFutures Australia. Plans for a second phase, contingent upon additional funding, will further expand RBA’s capabilities by consolidating seed processing, storage, and office facilities on the same site. This development aims to optimize operational efficiency and utilize growers’ levies effectively.

Dr. Pengilley elaborated on the anticipated impact of the facility: “The new facility will substantially increase the scale of our rice breeding program, as well as the rapid adoption of new technologies to greatly enhance the rates of genetic gain we can achieve.” The focus is on ensuring that Australian rice growers have access to cutting-edge technologies and production techniques, ultimately securing a vibrant future for the industry.

As construction progresses, updates will be provided to keep stakeholders informed about the facility’s development. This initiative underscores the commitment to innovation and sustainability within the Australian rice sector.

Rice Breeding Australia is recognized as a leader in developing high-performing rice varieties tailored for the future of farming. As a not-for-profit agricultural research organization, RBA is dedicated to promoting sustainable and profitable rice production through innovation and collaboration. By utilizing advanced technologies and crop management practices, RBA aims to deliver high-quality rice varieties that meet the evolving needs of local farmers.
