During a pre-game event on October 5, 2023, prior to the Illawarra Hawks’ victory over the Brisbane Bullets, alumni and guests gathered to learn about the impactful work being conducted at the Yerbury Lab. The event, held at the Hawks’ home arena, aimed to raise awareness and support for research initiatives dedicated to motor neuron disease.

Researchers from the University of Wollongong (UOW) participated in the event, encouraging attendees to contribute to the Yerbury Lab through the MND Research Fund. Among the notable figures present was UOW Vice Chancellor Max Lu, who expressed pride in the lab’s significant contributions to medical research, honoring the legacy of former Hawks player Professor Justin Yerbury.

Community Engagement and Awareness

Editor Kathy Sharpe of the Illawarra Mercury emphasized that the campaign supporting the Yerbury Lab extends beyond financial contributions. “Yes, research costs money, and while we are appealing to Hawks fans and the wider community to donate to the lab through the MND Research Fund, it’s also important for us to use our platform to create awareness,” she stated.

Sharpe highlighted that many individuals are unaware of the vital research taking place in Wollongong, which continues the momentum initiated by Professor Yerbury. “This research has the potential to change people’s lives,” she added.

The timing of the appeal coincided with the Hawks’ alumni round, a fitting tribute to Yerbury’s dual legacy as a prominent player and a leading researcher. Former players and their families were in attendance, reflecting a strong sense of community and support for both the sport and the important cause.

Support and Future Initiatives

The event served as a reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to combat motor neuron disease, which affects thousands worldwide. Contributions to the Yerbury Lab not only assist in funding vital research but also raise awareness about the challenges faced by those living with the disease.

As the Illawarra Hawks continue their season, the support for the Yerbury Lab remains a priority. Fans and community members are encouraged to learn more about how they can contribute to this critical research initiative. Donations can be made directly through the MND Research Fund, supporting a cause that resonates deeply within the community.
