Australian motorcycle racer Josh Waters was honored by his hometown of Mildura on March 15, 2024, during a Civic Reception hosted by the Mildura Rural City Council. The event acknowledged Waters as a five-time Australian Superbike Champion, marking him as the most successful rider in the championship’s 36-year history. This celebration highlighted not only his impressive achievements on the racetrack but also his deep roots in the community.
Waters, who began riding at the age of five and won his first national title at six, has demonstrated remarkable talent and determination throughout his career. He secured championships in 2009, 2012, 2017, 2024, and 2025, showcasing his longevity and skill in a highly competitive sport. His racing journey has taken him to prestigious events like Japan’s Suzuka 8 Hour Endurance Race and the British Superbike Championship, where he has consistently achieved podium finishes.
Despite his international success, Waters remains committed to his hometown. “I’ve been able to achieve what I have achieved, but I have done it all from Mildura,” he stated. He emphasized his love for the area and its community, saying, “I train here and I live here because that is where I want to live.”
Mildura Mayor Ali Cupper praised Waters for his contributions to the region, calling him an “outstanding ambassador.” She remarked, “Josh’s dedication, professionalism, and genuine character make him someone our whole community is proud of.” This sentiment was echoed by Councillor for Sports Glenn Milne, who noted that Waters’ record of five championships might remain unmatched for generations. “He has ridden with success in Japan, England, America—he’s respected around the world,” Milne said, adding that Waters is also known for his humility and willingness to help others.
For Waters, the recognition from his community holds significant meaning. “I certainly don’t do any of it for the accolades,” he reflected. “But it does mean a lot when you are recognized by people in your own town, and a lot of the time it is people who mightn’t even have an interest in the sport.” He expressed pride in being a familiar figure in Mildura, emphasizing his role as a father. “When I go pick up my kids from school, I might hear, ‘Hey, aren’t you that motorbike rider?’ I just say, ‘Yeah, that’s me—but I’m also Izzy and Lenny’s dad.'”
The celebration of Josh Waters serves not only as recognition of his athletic achievements but also as a reminder of the strong community ties that define his identity as both a champion and a local resident. As he continues to excel in his career, Waters remains a source of inspiration for many in Mildura and beyond.
